Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.)


The Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Team is comprised of Police Officers from throughout the Parkersburg Police Department whose primary duties range from Patrol Officers to Detectives to Division Commanders.  Members of the S.W.A.T. Team participate in regularly scheduled training above and beyond their primary responsibilities.

To become a member of the S.W.A.T. Team officers must have a minimum of two years experience as a Parkersburg Police Officer and demonstrate a minimum of 90% expertise in shooting all three weapons systems for the three firearms qualifications preceding their application to the team.  Applicants to the S.W.A.T. Team must successfully complete a rigorous physical agility test as well as a specialized, time limited obstacle course which requires firing various weapons systems while moving.  Applicants also undergo an interview with S.W.A.T. Team leadership and must successfully complete S.W.A.T. School.

The S.W.A.T. Team is trained and utilized to execute dangerous search warrants, respond to hostage / barricaded subject situations, and resolve other critical incidents which arise anytime day or night.  The S.W.A.T. Team plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of the community during dangerous incidents.
